What’s so Secret about Llanbedr?
And why choose Llanbedr as your base for any visit to
Snowdonia.
Well, the weather for a start. We have hot summers and mild winters.
The mountains meet the sea here, so summer showers tend to pass
over us.
Autumn here is colourful and glorious, the forests are a picture
in red, green and gold. . In Spring you get Lambs, Bluebells and
Rhododendrons. True, in February we get snow, but it’s only
on the mountain tops and in the winter sun and clear air, that
just looks so beautiful.
Things are different here. Some people tell us we are a little
‘lost in time’. Perhaps we like it that way. Llanbedr
is a proper community, a place where hill farming is still conducted
in the way it has been for centuries. The male voice choir rehearse
here every Sunday as it always has done. People still stop and
chat to each other in the streets.
The countryside here is less of a secret. Llanbedr’s like
an poem or an opera . The stars seem closer here. And our mountains?
If they are not the most beautiful in Europe, they have to be
amongst the most beautiful. The Victorians spoke of them as ‘Britain’s
Alps’, just they referred to our shoreline as ‘this
nation’s Bay of Naples’.
King George adored our beaches. You will too. You’ll find
mile-after-mile of
un-crowded golden sands (and yes, it really is golden) .
Llanbedr is unspoilt. Last year bird watchers staying on Cym
Nantcol Farm counted 52 varieties, including Buzzards, Red Kite
and the deliciously named Ring Ouzel.
The waters here are clear - Otters thrive. Fishing is good in
the rivers, lake and the sea. Stay long enough and you’ll
spot dolphins and seals.
There are no amusement
arcades in Llanbedr, though we do have our own attractions - Shell
Island, the Slate Caverns and childrens farm, and if you are feeling
really energetic and adventurous you can book an adventure day
or days out see "Outdoor Adventures" on the menue list
From the village there
are endless possibilities for walks from gentle strolls along
our 2 beautiful rivers the Artro and the Nant Col or it is possible
to walk straight into the mountains where you may only have the
soaring buzzards for company. You can follow in the footsteps
of ancient travellors on prehistoric roads, see buriel chambers
and standing stones. Follow the trackways of the drovers that
used to take cattle and sheep over the mountains to the markets
in England before the coming of the railway. It is still possible
to trace the line of the old horse drawn coaching road as is wends
its over over the mountains from Harlech to London
You can stay in terrific
hotels, pubs, B&Bs
or chose a self-catering holiday
.
You may even want to
spend time on a traditional Welsh working farm in Farm house B&B
or self catering farm cttage
